Chinese Government Awards “World Leading” Designation to Emerson’s New Heating Technology 

 

ST. LOUIS, January 10, 2006 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today announced that China’s Ministry of Construction has awarded a heat pump system using Emerson’s new Copeland Digital Scroll™ Heating technology with its highest endorsement – designating it as a “world leading” technology. This marks the first time in seven years that any new technology in China has received this top designation from the Ministry of Construction.

 

A heat pump is basically an electric-powered air conditioner that can operate in reverse – absorbing heat from the outdoor air (or ground) and pumping it indoors to heat a space. The heat pump’s compressor moves refrigerant through outdoor and indoor coils to enable the heating or cooling cycle.

 

A heat pump system using Emerson’s Copeland Digital Scroll™ Heating compressor with its new enhanced heating technology has greater heating capacity and operates more efficiently at low outdoor temperatures than a conventional heat pump.

 

Emerson is introducing the new technology first in China where a booming housing market, rising energy consumption and environmental concerns have created demand for energy-efficient heating and cooling systems.

 

Heat pumps account for 80 percent of residential heating and cooling systems sold in China. However, conventional heat pumps do not effectively handle the heating requirements during northern China’s cold winters. Consequently, many homes and buildings in that region have a second heating system installed (usually a hot water boiler system).

 

With Copeland Digital Scroll™ Heating technology, heat pump systems operate better and more efficiently in cold temperatures – and the supplemental heating system for a home is not needed.

 

GREE, a leading HVAC equipment manufacturer in China, will use Copeland Digital Scroll™ Heating technology in a new cold-weather heat pump system for multi-unit dwellings that it plans to introduce in early 2006.

The “world leading” designation paves the way for heat pump systems with Copeland Digital Scroll™ Heating to be used in government-supported projects to promote energy efficiency. Emerson Climate Technologies is also working with other Chinese manufacturers to apply the new technology to non-digital scroll compressors used in conventional heat pumps and air conditioners.

 

The technology endorsement from China’s Ministry of Construction and the landing of a major customer for Copeland Digital Scroll™ Heating builds on Emerson’s growing success in China.  In addition, Emerson has been working collaboratively with the Chinese government to establish a framework for formulating and implementing standards for energy efficiency.  This past year Emerson Climate Technologies helped the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) and the China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS) develop a public education campaign to raise awareness of the “China Energy Label” when buying an air conditioner (see www.51sd.org.cn).
