Emerson’s scroll technology has continued to advance the industry and provide new applications, such as the Copeland Scroll Digital™ compressor, winner of the 2007 AHR Expo Innovation Award and Product of the Year. Today, nearly 60 million energy efficient Copeland Scroll compressors have been installed in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems and other applications around the world, according to Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR).
Emerson’s Copeland Scroll compressors feature a rotating scroll-set design, with fewer moving parts to compress gas more efficiently, reliably, and quietly. Sales of Emerson’s scroll compressor technology have been one of the growth drivers for the company’s financial success over the past decade. In fiscal 2006, sales of Copeland Scroll compressors totaled $1.7 billion.

When the Copeland Scroll compressor was introduced in 1987, it quickly gained preference from residential air conditioning contractors and manufacturers, in part, because of its ability to achieve previously unheard of levels of efficiency in an era of increasing energy standards. Emerson has also expanded the market for its scroll compressors to include commercial air conditioning, refrigeration, and several unique applications in various markets, such as medical equipment and the oil and gas industry.
More recently, Copeland Scroll technology was again integral in preparing the HVACR industry to make the transition to higher federal efficiency standards for central air conditioners and heat pumps in the United States in 2006. Emerson redesigned its scroll compressor technology to increase the efficiency of the compressors by up to six percent, reduce operating sound further, and made the product up to 30 percent lighter and smaller than the prior version.
Today, Copeland Scroll offers the industry’s broadest line of scroll compressors made to operate with R-410A, the more environmentally friendly refrigerant that most of the air-conditioning industry is adopting in advance of a required phase-out in the use of HCFC (hydrochloroflurocarbon) refrigerants in new equipment.
Emerson has also introduced Copeland Scroll technology in several other product offerings, including the modulating Copeland Scroll Digital compressor for use in light commercial applications and the two-stage modulating Copeland Scroll compressor for high-efficiency residential applications.
