R$60 million investment to build new manufacturing and operations facility in SorocabaSorocaba, Brazil, October 27, 2009 – Emerson (NYSE: EMR) announced today an investment of R$60 million (approximately US$35 million) to expand its manufacturing plant and operations facility in Sorocaba, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Located about 95 kilometers west of the city of Sao Paulo, Emerson’s campus in Sorocaba will become the company’s headquarters in Brazil, and the company plans to consolidate its shared-services functions at the site, including finance, administration, legal, IT, marketing, logistics and customer service. Emerson is also constructing a new 45,000-square-meter facility for its manufacturing and office needs.
During a memorandum of intent signing event with Sorocaba city officials, Ed Monser, Emerson’s chief operating officer, said that Brazil continues to be a key market for Emerson’s worldwide operations and will grow as the economic recovery takes hold.
"This investment will position all of Emerson’s businesses to better serve our customers in Brazil and reinforce our long-standing commitment to growing our market in this country and throughout Latin America,” Monser said.
In Sorocaba, Emerson Process Management currently manufactures magnetic flow meters, control valves and pressure regulators, pressure transmitters and control systems used to improve operating efficiency within process manufacturing plants, such as refineries. Emerson’s Sorocaba facility also provides asset management services, systems integration, custody transfer and natural gas regulator skids, and flow lab instrument calibration.
"We are especially excited about the automation technologies we can provide to our customers in Brazil to support offshore subsea oil and gas exploration and production optimization through our recent acquisition of Roxar, the industry leader in this space,” Monser added.
The new facility will house multiple Emerson businesses, including Emerson Process Management, Emerson Network Power, Emerson Climate Technologies, Emerson Industrial Automation and Emerson Professional Tools. The number of employees who will work at Emerson’s Sorocaba campus is expected to double once construction is completed. The first phase of construction will begin in the first quarter of 2010 and is expected to be fully completed by the second quarter of 2012.
"This investment represents our commitment to growing our presence in the country. It will also help us address the needs of our current and potential customers while enabling us to continue delivering manufacturing excellence across the wide range of technologies and products we offer in the local marketplace,” said Fernando Francini, country manager for Emerson Brazil.
Emerson first established operations in Brazil in 1972 and has nearly tripled its sales in the country since 2003 with a wide range of technologies for the oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, metals and mining, and telecommunications industries. The company has approximately 1,000 employees, five manufacturing sites in the state of Sao Paulo, a project and service center in Macae, and sales and technical offices around the country.
