A variety of combustible gases and other safety hazards exist within power plants. Hydrogen gas is used by generators as a coolant to help keep the turbines from overheating. If hydrogen leaks from the coolers, dryers or filters, it creates a risk of fire or explosion. If hydrogen isn't used as a coolant, machinery can overheat and cause extensive damage. Hydrogen is also used as a coolant in lead acid battery rooms and can create a combustible hazard if it accumulates. In coal-powered power plants, monitoring is needed as coal dust is highly combustible and may accumulate in coal conveyers.
