Filter beds are used to purify water and are often composed of sand. As water flows through the layers of sand, it gets filtered as suspended solids are captured in the sand particles. Once the particles and sand set, the water will stop filtrating and the filtration process is initiated. Most commonly, air is pushed through the bottom of the filtration basin, unsettling the sand and allowing the water to filter through again. Level measurement instrumentation is needed to control the filtering processes to ensure a steady supply of filtered water and keep the level equal across several filter beds. Level measurement also gives full insight into potential maintenance needs of filtration basins.
