Level Measurement for IMO Type C Tank Single shell for Ammonia

Solutions to address customer challenges with marine level measurement

Ammonia has attracted wide interest as an alternate fuel for the maritime industry’s journey towards decarbonization. Since it does not emit any CO2 during combustion.

A challenge with ammonia is that it’s highly toxic, flammable and corrosive. The compound is a risk to humans and the environment in case of accident and leakage, requiring strict safety standards and overall caution. Ammonia takes on a liquid form at -33°C and atmospheric pressure. At 20°C a pressure of 7.5 bar is adequate to let the compound remain as liquid.

Level measurement by use of radar is ideal for a compound like ammonia since the devices can be maintained without being in contact with the content. However, ammonia can be a very difficult compound to measure reliably due to its tendency to change between its liquid and vapour states. Guided wave radar is relevant if the pressure is high. The implementation of accurate and reliable level measurement is critical to ensure process safety.
