Early Detection of Pump Cavitation with Advanced Pressure Diagnostics

A majority of pump failures are not caused by the pump itself. Pump problems, including cavitation, mostly occur when piping becomes blocked, limiting flow and causing low pressure to the pump that can severely damage the pump impeller. Cavitation can also occur from poor piping design or conditions not meeting NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head) requirements. If there is not enough pressure at the suction end of the pump it will begin to cavitate which can impact product quality, lead to excessive pump vibration, and eventually pump failure and process shutdown.
Fortunately, pump cavitation can be detected and corrected early by using the Rosemount 3051S pressure transmitter with the Process Intelligence diagnostic. Early detection can improve process quality, extend pump life, and increase process uptime by providing early warning of pump cavitation on the discharge of the pump.
