Steam flow measurement in the spalling process is used to remove coke deposits from the inside of the furnace tubes while thermally contracting and expanding the coils. Measuring steam flow can be challenging due to wide turndown requirements. A minimum flow rate is required to keep a positive steam flow when not spalling to prevent back flow into the system and the maximum flow rate was recommended to break up the coke that built up in the lines. Refineries may implement Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) for redundancy on the Coker heaters and to improve safety. The Rosemount™ 8800 Dual Vortex flow meter can handle wide turndown and enables redundancy while reducing the lay-length of the flow meter body.
