Emerson and South Korea South East Power Company to collaborate on power plant projects

KOSEP will utilize Emerson’s state-of-the-art automation, control, and instrumentation technologies in power plants in emerging markets


PITTSBURGH (June 22, 2010) – Emerson Process Management, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), and South Korea South East Power Company (KOSEP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on modernizing existing power plants and constructing new ones in South Korea, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

Projections by the U.S. Energy Information Administration indicate that in the next 10 years, electricity generation will grow more than 25 percent globally – and more than 40 percent in the regions targeted by this agreement. 

The alliance leverages Emerson’s expertise in power plant automation with KOSEP’s experience as a developer, operator, and owner of thermal and hydro power generation facilities.  KOSEP currently provides more than 10 percent of South Korea’s electric-generating capacity.

Under the agreement, KOSEP will standardize on Emerson’s state-of-the-art automation, control, and instrumentation technologies, including its PlantWeb™ digital plant architecture with Ovation™ expert control system.  The two companies will also exchange technology to help power plants improve boiler and turbine efficiency.

Emerson renews agreement with Heriot-Watt University for use of Roxar RMS

Software helps researchers improve their capabilities for understanding and predicting oil & gas reservoir performance


Stavanger, Norway (July 7, 2010) – Emerson Process Management has renewed for an additional year its agreement with Heriot-Watt University for use of Emerson's industry leading reservoir modeling software, Roxar RMS.  Researchers at the Edinburgh-based University will use the software to gain a better understanding of oil & gas reservoirs and help to reduce risk in reservoir management decisions.

As part of the agreement, Heriot-Watt’s Institute of Petroleum Engineering will continue to have access to 164 Roxar RMS licenses. Roxar RMS is playing a key role in the Institute’s Uncertainty Project where the software is being run on Heriot-Watt computing clusters to develop thousands of models that can assist in history matching and better quantify uncertainty in reservoir performance.

"It provides the Institute of Petroleum Engineering and its graduates with access to and experience with some of the industry’s most advanced reservoir modeling technologies, and through their feedback, it enables Emerson to continue to further advance its solutions.”

Professor Mike Christie, who leads the Uncertainty Project, commented on the usefulness of the software in the work of the Institute: "We are extremely pleased that Emerson has continued its support of our project with this donation. Previously, we have used Roxar RMS in history matching reservoir models by combining our extensive range of history matching methods and expertise in uncertainty quantification with Roxar RMS’s world leading commercial geological modeling capabilities. With the project now entering the third phase, Roxar RMS will help us achieve a greater degree of geological realism in our uncertainty predictions."

Heriot-Watt’s Uncertainty Quantification program started in 2002 and is a joint industry project to enable the practical deployment of more effective uncertainty tools in reservoir management. Current sponsors are BP, BG Group, ConocoPhillips, and the Japan Oil, Gas & Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC).

The project’s aim is to combine advanced software, modern cluster computing, and a sound understanding of theory to quantify uncertainty in reservoir performance predictions.

Roxar RMS has been used in the project to history match models with geological parameters such as facies object dimensions, fault seal parameters, and fault locations and properties. The result is models that are not only history matched to production data, but are also geologically realistic. Using specific RMS modules to add geologic realism, Heriot-Watt was also able to produce excellent history matches of a BP Field in Alaska.

Emerson’s flagship reservoir modeling solution, Roxar RMS, comprises 13 fully integrated software modules, including mapping, reservoir modeling, well planning, reservoir simulation and uncertainty modeling tools. The software operates on Linux 64-bit, Windows XP and the Vista 32 and 64-bit platforms, as well as Windows 7 64-bit.
