Helping Food Retailers Sustainably Manage Food Waste

Grind2Energy helps Whole Foods Market convert food waste into renewable energy

"Emerson has helped Whole Foods Market produce more than 220,000 pounds of nutrient-rich fertilizers, eliminate greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to more than 2.5 million automobile miles and convert enough natural gas to heat nearly 850 homes for one month."

One of the highest volume and steady producers of food waste is the U.S. grocery industry. For every $1,000 in revenue grocery stores generate, 10 pounds of food waste is created. When grocery store food waste is diverted, it has the potential to benefit both society and the environment. With large amounts of seafood meats, produce, prepared foods and baked goods, supermarkets and food retailers can greatly benefit from a Grind2Energy food waste recycling system.

Grind2Energy has partnered with Whole Foods Market to help the company succeed with its commitment and dedication to environmental responsibility. The Grind2Energy solution, which is now installed at 10 locations in the area, has helped Whole Foods Market in their multi-faceted and ongoing efforts to dramatically reduce landfill waste from their stores. As the company continues to expand use of Grind2Energy, the successful partnership was recently celebrated when Whole Foods Market designated Grind2Energy as the region’s Green Supplier of the Year. Grind2Energy was initially installed in 2014 in a Whole Foods Market in Andover, Massachusetts handling the store’s food waste from the meat and seafood departments, as well as produce and prepared foods. Since then, Emerson has helped Whole Foods Market produce more than 220,000 pounds of nutrient-rich fertilizers, eliminate greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to more than 2.5 million automobile miles and convert enough natural gas to heat nearly 850 homes for one month.

With Grind2Energy, forward-thinking businesses now have a sustainable solution to improve operational efficiency and sanitation while also doing their part to help preserve the environment.

"The pilot store...now requires one 30-yard trash compactor truck per month to handle the waste, down from eight trucks before the installation."

Sendik’s Food Markets in Wisconsin is another example of a forward-thinking food retailer using the Grind2Energy system to reduce their carbon footprint and improve efficiency. Since 2015, they have transformed over 4,800 tons of food scraps into renewable energy.

Published on Progressive Grocer, the article “Sendik’s Turns Food Waste Into Energy” states, “Sendik’s Food Markets has eliminated 4.7 million car miles worth of greenhouse gas emissions annually by in installing InSinkErator’s Grind2Energy systems in its 12 Milwaukee-area stores. The system grinds food waste from the stores and holds it in tanks at each location until it is trucked to an anaerobic digester facility to be converted into biogas and fertilizer, according to the company. Before installing the systems this month, Sendik’s stores had composted their food waste. The pilot store in Mequon, which installed the system in November, now requires one 30-yard trash compactor truck per month to handle the waste, down from eight trucks before the installation.”

From start to finish, Grind2Energy will make the disposal of your food waste cleaner, easier, and more efficient. It’s a big idea, and it all starts with your facility and Grind2Energy, the food waste recycling system from Emerson.
