Alliance offers complete turbine solution that gives power generators an alternative to their original supplier for automation and long-term service and support
PITTSBURGH (November 12, 2013) — Emerson Process Management and Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas, Inc. (MPSA) have extended their alliance for turbine retrofit projects in the Americas. The alliance brings together Emerson’s expertise designing and engineering automation and control systems for the power industry with MPSA’s extensive experience in gas and steam turbine technology and service, providing power generators with an alternative to their original controls, service and parts supplier for long-term turbine support.
Established in 2008, the alliance supports retrofits of W501F, W501B, W501D5A, W501A, W501D5 and W251 gas turbines, as well as all models of Mitsubishi and Westinghouse technology steam turbines. MPSA has unique and valuable expertise on Westinghouse technology turbines since Mitsubishi was involved in the design and development of this technology through licensing and alliance agreements with Westinghouse.
Mitsubishi’s ongoing advancements in 501 series gas turbine technology have resulted in the successful design and operation of the company’s high efficiency G-series and J-series gas turbines. Today, Mitsubishi continues to support and modernize the original Westinghouse technology platform by supplying technological advancements that are directly applicable to the Westinghouse fleet.
Emerson and MPSA have collaborated on a number of turbine retrofit projects and are currently performing mechanical upgrades and installing the Ovation™ control system at two power plants in Texas. The companies performed similar work in 2012 at the Termovalle S.C.A. E.S.P. plant in Cali, Colombia, following a devastating natural disaster.
“The success of our alliance with MPSA is a clear indication that power generators were hungry for an OEM alternative for their gas and steam turbine retrofits,” said Bob Yeager, president of Emerson Process Management’s Power & Water Solutions. “Together, we’ve answered this unmet need in the marketplace and, in doing so, have given utilities enhanced turbine reliability, durability and operability, as well as long-term service and support that they may not have received from their turbine OEMs.”
For decades Emerson’s automation technology has been helping customers to control critical power generation processes, increase plant efficiencies and megawatt production, and realize long-term operation and maintenance savings. As the leading control systems supplier to the North American power market, Emerson has supplied approximately 1,600 steam and gas turbine control systems. The company’s Ovation control system was designed specifically to meet the unique challenges of the power generation industry with such features as fully coordinated boiler/HRSG-turbine control and automated startup and shutdown sequencing, among others. The Ovation system also offers a full suite of security solutions that help power generators address NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection requirements, as well as model-based advanced control applications that can dramatically improve plant efficiency and reliability.
MPSA is a leading OEM provider for outage services in North America with a proactive turbine service program focused on safety, high reliability and availability, performance improvement, output increase, turbine life extension, and world class outage implementation. MPSA brings a wealth of service support experience to the alliance including form-fit equivalent product modifications, long-term service agreements, gas and steam turbine outage services, and new and extended-life parts, as well as U.S.-based manufacturing, shop repair and engineering support.
