Sponsorship of rocket sculpture art trail in Leicester demonstrates Emerson’s commitment to STEM initiatives and local community activities

LEICESTER, UK (Feb. 10, 2021) – Emerson has pledged its support for a rocket-themed public art initiative in Leicester that will boost the city’s economy and encourage young people’s passion for the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths. The company has agreed to sponsor one of 40 spectacularly decorated rocket sculptures that will form the Rocket Round Leicester art trail through the city.

The trail will form a pivotal part of Leicester’s economic recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will also include an associated learning programme with students from local schools and colleges designing their own rocket sculptures.

“As a global technology and software  company that provides solutions and services for some of the world’s biggest automation projects, Emerson is committed to supporting STEM initiatives that inspire the next generation of engineers and software developers,” said Julian Collis, vice president, information technology Europe at Emerson. “Rocket Round Leicester is a unique community event and that will help the local economy and ignite interest in the STEM subjects and the exciting careers they can lead to.”

Emerson has supported UK customers from its Leicester facility since 1984, and the event’s rocket theme is one that particularly resonates with the company, as some of Emerson’s advanced automation technologies have played a key role in the success of many critical space missions over the years. These technologies include sensors supporting propulsion monitoring, space probe servo-valves, control surface actuators and manoeuvring controls for remotely operated vehicles. For example, Emerson’s portfolio of high pressure and high temperature sensors have journeyed to the farthest reaches of space with the Voyager programme and also supported many commercial missions into space.

The family-friendly art trail, which will run from July to September 2021, is being created by leading art event producers Wild in Art, in association with LOROS Hospice, which provides compassionate care to more than 2,500 people in and around Leicester. Each rocket will be designed by a professional artist and auctioned after the event to raise funds for the hospice.

“Emerson has proactively supported LOROS Hospice for several years, and many employees have had personal experience of friends and family who have benefited from its care,” said Collis. “We are delighted to be involved in this event, which will enable us to engage with the community and support the vital work done by LOROS Hospice.”
