Intelligent Multistage Completion Network

Wireless access to lower completion for reservoir monitoring and flow control at the sand face.

Intelligent Multistage Completion Network - Real-Time Online Data Access and Flow Control Directly in the Reservoir

Real-Time Online Data Access and Flow Control Directly in the Reservoir

The Intelligent Multistage Completion Network, an Emerson-Metrol partnership project, bridges upper and lower completions, delivering continuous reservoir data and zonal control from the sand face to surface and simplifying monitoring and control in complex wells.

A permanent reservoir monitoring system is installed in the upper completion with Roxar™ Matrix Downhole Wireless Interface enabling connection to Metrol wireless monitoring and control devices in the lower completion.

This provides the operator with the ability to manage the reservoir efficiently and make decisions based on real data - not assumptions.

How It Works

Intelligent Multistage Completion Network - Roxar Integrated Downhole Network

Roxar Integrated Downhole Network

The Intelligent Multistage Completion Network builds on the proven capabilities of the existing Roxar Integrated Downhole Network, a field‑validated architecture that has been successfully deployed in wells worldwide.

It includes a permanent downhole gauge installation in the upper completion for life of well data and uses field proven wireless telemetry technologies to enable communication with Metrol sensors and controls located in a lower completion, sand screen or other remote well location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to the most common questions about the Intelligent Multistage Completion Network (IMCN) - from how it provides real-time reservoir insight to how it enables remote flow control and continuous production optimization.

The Intelligent Multistage Completion Network links cabled gauges in the upper completion with wireless sensors in the lower completion, enabling communication across the entire wellbore. This hybrid approach:

  • Retains reliable permanent monitoring (wired gauges)
  • Adds flexibility and access to remote zones (wireless sensors)
  • Bridges the traditional communication gap between upper and lower completions without the requirement for a wetmate connector between the upper and lower completion and packer feedthroughs

The Emerson Roxar Intelligent Multistage Completion Network (IMCN) powers its downhole sensors and flow-control devices using batteries. Battery life depends on the reservoir temperature and the amount of data that is logged and transmitted.

The higher the temperature the shorter the battery lifetime.

High resolution logging rate requires more power than a more balanced logging and transmission.

Depending on the installed instruments, the Intelligent Multistage Completion Network can provide:

  • Pressure and temperature data
  • High-resolution temperature profiles

This enables operators to move from assumption-based decisions to data-driven decisions.

The Intelligent Multistage Completion Network (IMCN) solution from Emerson is designed for: multi-stage completions (upper + lower) or multi-laterals, wells with remote or hard-to-access reservoir zones, situations requiring real-time monitoring and flow control at the sandface.

Yes. The Intelligent Multistage Completion Network can: communicate with wireless flow control valves, adjust flow rates or shut off zones completely, enable selective control across multiple zones.

No. The Intelligent Multistage Completion Network (IMCN) uses a single Tubing Encapsulated Conductor (TEC) wired system to communicate with wireless instruments and controls and does not require additional topside or subsea control-system hardware. The system uses a single standard interface card, requires no additional penetration through well barriers. This significantly reduces system complexity and installation risk.

The Intelligent Multistage Completion Network uses:

  • A Roxar Matrix Downhole Wireless Interface
  • Wireless telemetry to connect to Metrol instruments in the lower completion

It integrates permanent upper completion gauges and wireless reservoir sensors and control devices.

The Intelligent Multistage Completion Network enables:

  • Monitoring reservoir pressure while the well is flowing
  • Understanding reservoir connectivity and drainage
  • Detecting production issues (e.g., water breakthrough)

This data supports production optimization and improved recovery strategies.
