Around the world, there are multiple conversions underway to retrofit conventionally powered ships to run on methanol. So far, major container shipping companies have been at the forefront of methanol retrofits. When methanol is used as fuel, tank monitoring must comply with the IGF Code, ensuring ship safety with methyl/ethyl alcohol and other low-flashpoint fuels. Methanol is highly flammable and toxic, therefore requiring careful handling.
Radar-based solutions are the ideal technology for monitoring methanol tanks, a reliable and widely used solution in large marine fuel tanks. A key advantage is that only one level-measuring device is needed, as the electronics can be replaced without compromising tank integrity. In contrast, technologies requiring tank entry in the event of a malfunction would require more devices, increasing complexity and risk. By integrating Emerson’s radar technology, methanol-converted ships can achieve more reliable fuel monitoring.
