Plastic Vibration Welding

Vibration Welding

Branson continuously advances vibration welding technology to meet customers’ complex plastic joining needs at high-volumes.

What is Vibration Welding?

Vibration plastic welding is an energy-efficient technology that optimizes productivity on assembly lines. It is ideal for joining large plastic parts, intricate areas, multi-plane objects and curved surfaces of varying shapes, and is a common technology in automotive, appliance production and other industries. The new Clean Vibration Technology (CVT) from Emerson’s Branson creates cleaner welds with less flash and particulate than ever before.

How Does Vibration Welding Work?

Plastic Vibration Welding

Vibration Welding is a joining solution that is capable of welding together complex, irregularly shaped or large parts.  Vibration welding uses heat energy generated when one part is held stationary while the other part is moved in a linear, back-and-forth motion. The heat generated initiates a controllable meltdown at the interface of the parts. Vibration welding requires that the part interface accommodate the relative motion inherent in the process.

Vibration Welding Process

The plastic vibration welding process uses rapid linear motion to create friction and heat at the joint interface of the parts to be mated. This process lasts until the right molten state is reached. The plastic then solidifies under clamping pressure and forms a permanent bond. Emerson’s Branson vibration welders are the only products in the market also capable of orbital vibration technology, which increases joint welding opportunities to meet a wider range of requirements.

Applications

Plastic vibration welding is frequently chosen for applications which involve complex, irregularly shaped or large parts, and is suitable for use with most thermoplastics.  It is also a good choice for applications requiring high-strength hermetic seals and fast cycle times. The technology allows for the welding of multiple parts in a single cycle while requiring low energy usage.
