Replacing existing controls on Siemens V.84.2 and Kraftwerk Siemens turbines with Ovation™ technology expected to boost reliability and availability of 220-MW plant

PITTSBURGH (February 22, 2011) — Emerson Process Management is replacing outdated gas and steam turbine controls, as well as balance of plant (BOP) controls, at the Felipe Carrillo Puerto power plant in Valladolid, Mexico. The 220-MW, 2x1 combined-cycle plant is owned by Comisíon Federal de Electricidad (CFE).

The plant’s existing Siemens controls had been in use since the plant began commercial operation in the early 1990s. By replacing these controls with Emerson’s PlantWeb™ digital plant architecture with Ovation™ control technology, CFE expects to generate electricity more reliably, thereby meeting the region’s growing demand for power.

Emerson met an aggressive 10-month delivery schedule, as specified in the contract. When the retrofit is complete in April, the Ovation system will manage more than 6,000 I/O points. Specifically, Ovation technology will perform data acquisition and directly control the plant’s two Siemens V.84.2 gas turbines, Kraftwerk Siemens steam turbine, gas and steam turbine hydraulic governors, steam bypass, turbogenerator, two B&W Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) and balance of plant equipment and systems. Emerson is supplying 11 Ovation controllers, 15 workstations, its AMS Suite predictive maintenance software, 30 Rosemount 3051 transmitters and a UPS system.

“The turbine control capabilities we are providing for this plant are based on decades of power generation industry experience, including providing mechanical hydraulic control, and electro hydraulic control and equipment for gas and steam turbines from all major turbine OEMs,” said Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. “Our Ovation technology will be integral to the plant’s ability to achieve greater operational reliability and availability.”
