IRPC’s new combined heat and power plant in Thailand to utilize Emerson’s PlantWeb™ digital architecture with Ovation™ system to control critical processes

Ovation technology will link new CHP plant with largest integrated petrochemical complex in southeast Asia, enabling enhanced efficiency and productivity

PITTSBURGH (February 9, 2011) — Emerson Process Management’s PlantWeb™ digital plant architecture with the Ovation™expert control system has been selected to control critical equipment and processes at IRPC (Integrated Refinery & Petrochemical Complex) Public Co. Ltd.’s new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant in Thailand. The plant’s construction and engineering contractors, Marubeni Corporation and Jurong Engineering Ltd., awarded the contract to Emerson.

When fully operational in mid-2011, the six-unit CHP plant will produce 220 MW of electricity and 450 tons/hr. of steam for IRPC’s integrated petrochemical complex in Rayong Province – the largest complex of its kind in southeast Asia – as well as for nearby industry. The plant’s six GE Frame 6B gas turbines and six Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) will also supply electricity to the country’s electrical grid.

“It was important for the control system to not only control the new CHP plant, but also integrate the complex’s existing petroleum and petrochemical facilities. We are able to achieve this with Emerson’s automation solution,” said Peerasith Inthong, project manager, IRPC. “We anticipate this capability will translate into greater overall efficiency and productivity for the site’s overall operation.”

“Emerson has a tremendous amount of experience working with combined-cycle power plants and integrating multiple facilities,” said Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. “We were pleased to be selected for this project – our first with IRPC – to help ensure the safe, efficient and reliable operation of their integrated petrochemical complex.”

Emerson’s Ovation technology will monitor and directly control the CHP’s HRSGs, as well as balance-of-plant equipment and systems -- including modulating control functions, sequence/on-off control functions, process data storage and alarming. The Ovation system, which will also perform data acquisition and interface to the controls of the six gas turbines, will manage 11,000 I/O points. The new CHP plant will be linked to the site’s petrochemical operations through Ovation’s multi-network technology.

Under the contract, Emerson will also supply its AMS Suite predictive maintenance software.  The software will contribute to efficient plant maintenance and operations by giving operators online access to instrument and valve process information, diagnostic status information, and automatic documentation of field device maintenance information from HART intelligent devices throughout the plant. AMS Suite will also streamline device configuration and commissioning for more efficient plant startup.
