KEYNOTE/GENERAL SESSION

Refrigerant and Energy Regulations Update

Presenter:  Don Newlon, vp/gm refrigeration marketing, Emerson

Don Newlon will provide the latest update on the ever-changing regulatory landscape. With the EPA announcing its final rule on refrigerant delisting, the refrigeration equipment supply chain prepares for the DOE’s energy reduction mandates for stand-alone refrigeration systems in 2017. Don will place all of these recent regulatory actions within a historic, global perspective and demonstrate how the European Union is leading the charge on rulemaking through the passing of F-Gas regulations in 2014. Attendees will learn about a new class of alternative synthetic refrigerants that promise lower global warming potential, as well as the re-emergence of natural options such as propane and CO2. Impacts to equipment development, performance and handling requirements will be discussed in detail.

Retail and Foodservice for 2025: The Future for Customers, Operators and Facilities
Presenter:  Dean Landeche, vice president of marketing, retail solutions, Emerson

Emerson and global retail market experts Euromonitor have teamed up to create new research-based insights on the grocery, convenience, foodservice and mixed retail markets. Beyond a discussion of major trends in the marketplace, Dean Landeche, vice president of marketing, retail solutions, will present a vision of how grocery retail and chained foodservice outlets are set to evolve in the future. Particular emphasis will be placed on the built environments and infrastructure requirements of these facilities and what these “retail stores and restaurants of the future” will look like to attract, retain and entertain consumers.

Technician Shortage: Planning for the Future
Presenter:  Bob Labbett, vice president refrigeration communications & channel marketing, Emerson

The HVACR Workforce Development Foundation estimates that 115,000 HVACR technicians will be needed by 2022 to fill industry jobs in North America. In an era of dynamic regulatory changes, wide variations in system architectures and new product technologies, the need for qualified HVACR technicians is more critical than ever. And as the current pool of skilled technicians moves toward retirement, fewer of those entering the workforce are considering HVACR as a profession. Many would argue that the growing technician shortage is one of the greatest challenges facing the HVACR industry today.

Bob Labbett, Emerson’s vice president of refrigeration communications and channel marketing, will discuss industry stakeholder input — including contractors, vocational school educators and equipment manufacturers — to take a fresh look at this growing problem. He’ll examine the current state of the entire HVACR technician profession and focus on the unique challenges facing refrigeration contractors today. This interactive session will explore new solutions to the problem via an active conversation framed on the following key areas: awareness, recruitment and training.

BREAKOUT: APPLICATIONS
Utilizing Digital Retrofits to Achieve Capacity Modulation

Presenter:  Jason Prenger, director — refrigeration engineering, Emerson

Most supermarket refrigeration racks have very limited capacity modulation capability and are designed to provide a fixed output, regardless of the refrigeration requirements. This architecture makes it difficult to achieve the tight control over suction pressures needed to improve case temperature precision and reduce compressor cycling. To address this problem, many operators are opting to retrofit these racks with a digital compressor to serve as the lead compressor. Not only can this conversion take place during planned service intervals — such as when refrigerant charge is removed from the system — it also enables the supermarket to precisely match existing and future refrigeration load requirements. Jason Prenger, director of refrigeration engineering, will discuss the advantages of compressor modulation utilizing Copeland™ digital compressors and controller options.

Impact of Technology and CO2 on the Future of System Architecture
Presenter:  Derek Gosselin, director — technical product support, Hillphoenix

With more than 270 installations of CO2-based refrigeration systems in the United States and Canada, CO2 is quickly becoming a viable alternative to traditional hydrofluorocarbon systems. The trend toward wider CO2 adoption in North America is driven by multiple factors, including: the increasing availability of CO2-based equipment, improvements to CO2 technologies, and its proven track record in other parts of the world.

Derek Gosselin, Hillphoenix’s director of technical product support team, will lead this important discussion. He’ll take a closer look at some of the stores that have installed CO2 refrigeration architectures and present their results to date. Derek will discuss the considerations of moving to a CO2 system and in the process, dispel some myths about CO2. Topics of discussion will include: first costs versus total cost of ownership; installation; technician training; system pressures; design/sizing tips; and overcoming challenges in warmer climates. He will also examine how the move to CO2 impacts OEMs, wholesalers, contractors and end users.

Understanding Applications for Alternative Refrigerants
Presenter:  Jason Prenger, director — refrigeration engineering, Emerson

The EPA’s approval of several new lower-GWP refrigerants through its recent SNAP rulings has operators wondering which ones would best suit the needs of their businesses. Several refrigerants have already proven to increase energy efficiency in reach-ins, walk-ins, freezers and vending machines, but can they work reliably in compressors? Jason Prenger, director of refrigeration engineering, will head a discussion exploring the capacity and efficiency performance of various lower-GWP A1 refrigerants. He will also review which challenges the new refrigerants pose by compression technology and options to mitigate those challenges.

BREAKOUT: REGULATIONS
How to Meet 2017/2020 Energy Regulations

Presenter:  Allen Wicher, director, marketing — foodservice, Emerson

The foodservice industry is currently being influenced by the Department of Energy regulating energy consumption for walk-in coolers and freezers; reach-in, self-contained systems; and ice machines; each having a compliance date. Allen Wicher will address the implications of this regulation and moderate a discussion on how to achieve compliance. He will explore channel impact, testing procedures to compliance calculations and system improvement levers.

Trends in Supermarket Refrigeration Architecture
Presenter:  Ani Jayanth, director, product marketing — food retail and plants & labs refrigeration, Emerson
Presenter:  Mike Saunders, senior lead innovation technologist, Emerson

Today’s supermarket operators have a wide variety of refrigeration architectures from which to choose. Refrigerant regulations, sustainability objectives, and the desire to reduce energy consumption are driving many operators to forgo traditional refrigeration systems in favor of emerging architectures. This informative discussion will be led by Emerson’s subject matter experts in the supermarket space: Mike Saunders, senior lead innovation technologist; and Ani Jayanth, director of food retail marketing. Saunders and Jayanth will review several system architectures being utilized in supermarkets — from tried-and-true, HFC-based centralized and distributed direct expansion systems to CO2 booster, secondary and cascade systems. We will learn together the pros and cons of each system, evaluating capacity, performance, serviceability, environmental impacts and equipment costs. We will also explore how these options have evolved in response to industry drivers and led to the increasing adoption of CO2 architectures in food retail markets.

BREAKOUT: AIR CONDITIONING
HVAC Regulations, Refrigerants and Solutions

Presenter:  David Hules, director of commercial marketing, air conditioning business, Emerson

The changing regulatory climate has created a dynamic period of dialogue in the commercial HVAC industry. While the previous presidential administration introduced several regulations that will impact HVAC in the coming years, the current administration seeks to usher in an era of deregulation. Keeping track of the current requirements is a difficult task. As Emerson’s Director of Marketing for the Commercial Air Conditioning business, David Hules will help clarify any uncertainty by providing an update on the latest regulatory changes and their implications.

BREAKOUT: INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION

Natural Refrigerant Alternatives for Industrial Refrigeration

Presenter:  Antonio De Lourdes, lead engineer (R&D), Vilter Manufacturing

Presenter:  Andre Patenaude, director — CO2 business development, Emerson

The industrial refrigeration space is no stranger to natural refrigerant-based systems. Ammonia has been ever-present in low-temperature settings in process cooling and cold storage applications for nearly a century. But as these older systems need to be replaced, tightening safety standards and environmental regulations are driving many operators to seek other natural refrigerant alternatives. After proving its effectiveness in commercial refrigeration applications for more than a decade, CO2 is also emerging as a viable alternative in the industrial marketplace.

Antonio De Lourdes, senior project R&D engineer for Vilter, and Emerson’s director of CO2 business development, Andre Patenaude, will explore key natural refrigerant considerations and selection criteria, including: long-term planning, energy efficiency, safety and installed costs. Attendees will learn about the many benefits of using CO2 as a refrigerant and the available system architectures that are most applicable in industrial applications. Antonio and Andre will demonstrate how ammonia is still being used effectively in industrial applications in combination with CO2 by reducing its charge and moving it out of occupied spaces. Considering the unstable political climate, industrial refrigeration decisions must ultimately satisfy business objectives and community preferences.

Energy Efficiency and Security: Still Important in a World With Low-cost Fuel

Presenter:  Tom Hoopes, director, marketing and business development, Vilter Manufacturing
Presenter:  Alan Simchick, district sales manager, Vilter Manufacturing

In a world where low-cost fuel is expected for the long term, the use of combined heat and power (CHP) systems is becoming an increasingly viable option to offset rising power prices. Not only does CHP allow operators to take control of their energy supply through on-site power generation, it provides the benefit of capturing useful heat that can be repurposed in a variety of heating and cooling processes. With their potential to deliver significant energy savings, CHP and industrial heat pumps can add to your bottom line by reducing annual operating costs.

In this informative session, Tom Hoopes, Vilter’s director of marketing and business development, and Alan Simchick, Vilter’s district sales manager, will explain the basics of CHP cogeneration and combined cooling heat and power (CCHP), or trigeneration. The bulk of their discussion will focus on the application of these systems with internal combustion engines and gas turbine generators as the primary movers. In addition to learning about the business case for CHP adoption, attendees will also hear how industrial heat pumps can offer potential water savings and reduced energy consumption by recovering waste heat.
