Frequently Asked Questions

Power Module Basics

An Emerson SmartPower™ module is a purpose-built power source for industrial wireless field devices, engineered for long life, intrinsic safety, and reliable performance in harsh environments. Unlike standard batteries, SmartPower modules feature a keyed mechanical connection that allows safe replacement in classified hazardous areas without removing the transmitter. Emerson's wireless technology also includes a smart electronics package that reports the estimated remaining life back to your host system for predictive maintenance. Three module options - 701P Black, Green, and Blue Power Modules - are available to match your application and lifespan needs.

The 701P Black and Green Power Modules are the standard offerings for Emerson's Pervasive Sensing portfolio. The 701P  Black Power Module is compatible with most wireless devices and has up to 10 year battery life depending on the device's update rate, network topology, and environmental conditions. The 701P Green Power Module is compatible with polymer housing transmitters and also has up to a 10 year battery life. The Blue Power Module is recommended to extend the life of high performing transmitters. It can easily replace the Black Power Module in most devices and has double the capacity for energy intensive applications.

SmartPower™ modules last up to 10 years, depending on the application. Lifespan is primarily influenced by four main factors:

  • Update rates — Slower update rates extend battery life (a 60-second update rate lasts far longer than a 1-second rate)
  • Network position — Devices that route data for many neighbors consume more power and typically have a shorter life.
  • Ambient temperature — Extreme heat or cold reduces capacity.
  • Power module and device type — Different device types have different power requirements based on the sensor technology and measurement type. Blue Power Modules offer double the capacity of the standard power offerings and are best for demanding applications.

For an application-specific estimate, use the online Emerson Power Module Life Estimator. For automation OEMs designing compact wireless solutions, this same data helps optimize update rates and module selection for your power budget.

Safety & Replacement

Yes. Emerson SmartPower™ modules are intrinsically safe certified across all major global hazardous area standards:

  • FM (United States)
  • CSA (Canada)
  • ATEX (European Union)
  • IECEx (International)

The keyed mechanical design and sealed enclosure allow safe handling and replacement in classified hazardous areas.

While there may be other intrinsically safe power sources on the market, until they are listed on Emerson's product certificate, they cannot be used without voiding the intrinsic safety approval for the host instrument.

SmartPower™ modules are designed for safe, fast replacement in hazardous areas without removing the transmitter from service. The keyed mechanical connection prevents incorrect installation, and the power module can be replaced in under a minute by a single technician with no tools. Low-power module alerts are sent to your host system days or weeks in advance, giving maintenance teams time to plan replacement during routine rounds.

Lifecycle Management

Use the Plantweb™ Insight Power Module Application to centralize power module data across all WirelessHART® networks in a single dashboard. The application offers real time indication of power module health through calculated insights including Estimated Remaining and Total Life, Power Module Status, and Estimated Critical Temperature. These calculated insights provide an overview of power module health, and can be used to understand when maintenance must occur to avoid critical process downtime.

This application is important for monitoring assets as wireless infrastructures continue to grow. This advancement in industrial wireless battery management helps maintenance teams move from reactive replacement to planned, predictive lifecycle care. Learn more about Plantweb Insight Applications.
