Suitable for a wide range of applications, this reliable, drift-free device is field proven and sure to meet your measurement needs. Have confidence selecting your instrumentation, knowing that Emerson stands for quality, and worldwide support is at your fingertips.
Unique microwave resonance technology is utilized within the Roxar Watercut Meter. This key measurement is taken across the full pipe bore, ensuring a highly accurate representative measurement, regardless of the distribution of water and oil throughout the pipe. Measurement is to fiscal quality, drift-free and sensitive down to 50ppm of water.
The patented AutoZero feature utilizes live density input to automatically compensate for changes in oil density. A density input, typically from a Coriolis meter or a densitometer, is used to create dynamic compensation. This may be needed due to rotational well testing for example, and the AutoZero feature can provide the operator with the additional confidence they need.
In addition to volumetric water cut at meter conditions, by providing oil shrinkage in addition to the oil density input allows this feature to provide water cut based on mass. Mass based results essentially ensures the operator has representative measurement that can also be applied to the stock tank, and a measurement output that is independent of temperature.
The Roxar Watercut Meter has the ability to capture a snapshot of the conditions and measurements when requested, to correspond to when a sample is taken. This supports calibration to samples, when lab analysis is complete, ensuring the correct moments are compared. A sample taken box can be supplied, so the sample taker simply presses a button in field, to streamline this process.
Case Study
A mass and water cut metering system was installed at a large refinery site in Tianjin, China. The refinery now has full visibility into the quality of incoming crude oils, which improves reliability for their processes, as well as reliability and integrity of their mechanical equipment.
The Roxar Watercut Meter is a highly sensitive, full-bore instrument using advanced microwave resonance technology. Trusted globally in demanding onshore and offshore environments, it excels in water cut measurement across various applications, including oil outlets, pipelines, and refineries.
From water cut measurement on the oil outlet of a three phase separator to allocation or fiscal measurement at an oil pipeline, or at a desalter inlet in a refinery, or even fiscal quality measurement at a refined pipeline, the field proven Roxar Watercut Meter will provide the measurement you need.
The updated Roxar Watercut Meter features dual power supply options (100-240V AC and 24V DC), eliminating the need for converters. With internal modules for analogue inputs and outputs, integration is now simpler than ever.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Roxar Watercut Meter is part of the Emerson portfolio. It provides continuous and full-bore water cut measurement using Microwave Resonance technology. Measurement is to fiscal quality, drift-free and sensitive down to 50ppm of water.

The Roxar Watercut Meter is used in various applications, including Upstream: Monitoring the oil leg of three-phase separators and the liquid leg of two-phase separators, Midstream: Required for custody transfer measurements and during onloading for transportation and Downstream: Used for offloading at refineries and refined pipeline fiscal quality measurement.
Wax and scale build-up will affect meter performance. If scale or wax is present, an inline calibration can be performed to apply a correction for the measurement impact the layer will cause. This is a good solution until such time as meter cleaning can be scheduled. If layers are experienced and expected to repeat, use of chemical inhibitors is recommended.
In general, the flow should be well mixed to achieve optimum measurement quality. Nonetheless, the Roxar Watercut Meter performs 200 measurements per second, so assuming the flow is mixed sufficiently to ensure the sensor produces reliable signals, the meter will be able to measure the water cut, even in rapidly changing flowing conditions.
The Roxar Watercut Meter measures water and heavy oil with equal accuracy as water and crude oil. The measurement principles applied within the meter are equally suitable for heavy oil applications.
The Roxar Watercut Meter measures water and condensate with equal accuracy as water and crude oil. Flow separation will occur more rapidly with condensate though, so this should be considered when planning the meter installation. For example, long horizontal flowlines upstream of the meter should be avoided, and a mixer directly upstream of the meter should be considered.
Vertical installation is recommended, however horizontal installation is also acceptable. The flow computer must be installed close to the meter body, given the restriction of cable lengths, which is typically between 1 and 3 meters, depending on the meter size. The flow should be well mixed, so it is recommended to consider this when planning the piping arrangement and potentially consider the use of a mixer upstream of the meter. It is important the meter is located where there is good flow rates and turbulence that carries the flow through without hold-up or back-flow to ensure the highest quality of measurement performance. The sample point should ideally be close to the meter location.
ATEX and IECEx certifications are both available.
Service recommendations are made specifically for customers, based on their requirements and the demands on the measurement instrument, to ensure Emerson continually support their goals. In general, we recommend a service visit annually, to troubleshoot and maintain the meter. Should an issue arise, Emerson has trained service engineers available globally, ready to provide quick support. In addition, remote helpdesk support is an available option, ensuring a quick mechanism for technical support remotely from Emerson product specialists and senior service engineers. This also helps to maximize on-site efficiency, with a very clear and targeted approach.
The Roxar Watercut Meter is designed for minimum maintenance, with no moving parts, and a drift-free measurement approach. The full-bore design reduces the impact of scale and wax compared to a probe design, and the Roxar Watercut Meter does not require dynamic calibration for set-up or continued high-performance. The Roxar Watercut Meter is therefore a low maintenance instrument from Emerson.
The most important aspect is ensuring the manual sample is as representative as possible. To achieve this, the sample point should be as close to the Roxar Watercut Meter as possible, and the sample should be taken at a time when the Roxar meter readings reflect stable flowing conditions.
