How it Works
Fundamentals of Gas Chromatography
Emerson’s Rosemount™ natural gas chromatographs are designed for critical gas measurement applications. They handle C6+ BTU/CV for custody transfer, complex C9+ analysis with hydrocarbon dew point calculations, trace contaminant monitoring (including C6+ with H2S) for pipeline integrity, and product quality for LNG or NGLs.
Mon2020 Software
Emerson’s Rosemount™ GCs feature user-friendly MON software, enabling operators to configure, operate, and manage the analyzer locally or remotely and provide analytics and insights into the GC performance. MON software can communicate across the enterprise network, securely store critical data, and generate detailed reports, including chromatograms, alarm history, maintenance logs and more.
Sample Handling Systems
Any GC is only as good as the sample quality it measures, so Emerson’s gas chromatographs are custom-engineered for specific applications. Features include heated and open-panel designs, area classification-rated components, automatic calibration/validation, and various sample probes for reliable and stable sample extraction.
Columns and Valves
Emerson’s Rosemount™ GasChromatographs uses 6 or 10 port valves with double-sided diaphragm actuation, eliminating springs, O-rings, and lubrication for durability and low maintenance. Minimal internal movement ensures rapid actuation, ideal for micro-packed and capillary columns. Features include easy access, unobstructed sample flow, rotary liquid injection valves, and a lifetime warranty.
Detectors
Rosemountâ„¢ GCs can use multiple detector types for various needs in process applications. These include Thermal Conductivity Detectors (TCD) for measurements down to ultra-low ppm, Flame Ionization Detectors (FID) for ppb levels, and Flame Photometric Detectors (FPD) for detecting trace sulfur compounds, allowing for precise and reliable measurement of components from percent levels to low ppm.
Communications
Whether you need to network multiple process gas chromatographs throughout the plant or link asingle analyzer to the DCS system, Emerson’s Rosemount™ Gas Chromatographs can be configured to handle almost any communication scenario, including: Choice of Ethernet, Modbus Serial, or 4–20 mA analog outputs and Connectivity to plant control systems using industry-standard protocols such as Modbus
Gas Chromatograph Product Portfolio
Rosemount™ 470XA Gas Chromatograph
The Rosemount 470XA Gas Chromatograph is a compact, economical, and reliable solution designed to simplify natural gas analysis in fiscal and custody transfer applications. It provides accurate C6+ BTU/CV measurement that is fully traceable to international standards and doesn’t require a shelter for most environments, lowering the total cost of ownership. With an oven design based on the industry-proven Rosemount 770XA Gas Chromatograph, it offers flexible gas path configurations suitable for applications in renewable natural gas/biomethane and hydrogen markets.
Rosemountâ„¢ 700XA Gas Chromatograph
Designed for optimum reliability and flexibility, the Rosemount 700XA Process GC provides extended gas composition analysis with remote operation capabilities in an explosion-proof, field-mountable design. This reduces the need for elaborate analyzer shelters or temperature control requirements. Whether it is heating value measurement, trace contaminant monitoring, or product quality and process control, the Rosemount 700XA offers the flexibility to combine measurements in a single, transmitter-style GC, reducing footprint and total cost of ownership.
Rosemountâ„¢ 770XA Gas Chromatograph
Rosemount 770XA Natural Gas Chromatographs provide the most accurate analysis of natural gas available in a field mounted gas chromatograph (GC). The 700XA features a design that increases analytical capability, maximizes ease of use, and widens the range of analysis options in a GC with an ambient temperature rating of -20 °C to 60 °C/ -4 °F to 140 °F. These enhanced features make the 700XA ideal for natural gas custody transfer and applications requiring advanced analysis such as C9+ (with hydrocarbon dew point and cricondentherm calculations) and C6+ with hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
Rosemountâ„¢ 1500XA Gas Chromatograph
The Rosemount 1500XA process gas chromatograph combines the proven analytical components of Emerson's field-mounted gas chromatographs with the larger oven capacity of a traditional air-bath oven design. This modular and scalable analyzer provides unmatched flexility and reliability within a single analyzer and can be configured for various process gas applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our Gas Chromatographs function by separating and detecting components within a sample. Within the analytical oven, a column facilitates the separation of various components, while valves inject the sample and direct it through different flow paths. Finally, detectors are employed to identify and quantify the separated sample components. Gas Chromatography is a well-established and proven technology to provide comprehensive full composition analysis for natural gas and process gases.
Our Rosemount™ GCs are widely utilized throughout the oil and gas value chain—from upstream production, through midstream gas processing, transmission, and distribution, to downstream applications such as refining, petrochemical manufacturing, power generation, and various industrial and residential uses.
Typical applications include natural gas custody t m/emerson/en/measurement-instrumentation-msol/marketing/products/gas-analysis/documents/dl-rmt-00801-0300-0470.pdf ransfer, renewable energy initiatives such as hydrogen blending and renewable natural gas (RNG), carbon capture and utilization (CCU), gas processing, natural gas liquids (NGL), and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
