How it Works

Gas Analysis GC Fundamentals

Fundamentals of Gas Chromatography

Emerson’s Rosemount™ natural gas chromatographs are designed for critical gas measurement applications. They handle C6+ BTU/CV for custody transfer, complex C9+ analysis with hydrocarbon dew point calculations, trace contaminant monitoring (including C6+ with H2S) for pipeline integrity, and product quality for LNG or NGLs.

Gas Chromatographs Mon2020 Software

Mon2020 Software

Emerson’s Rosemount™ GCs feature user-friendly MON software, enabling operators to configure, operate, and manage the analyzer locally or remotely and provide analytics and insights into the GC performance. MON software can communicate across the enterprise network, securely store critical data, and generate detailed reports, including chromatograms, alarm history, maintenance logs and more.

Gas Analysis GC Sample Handling Systems

Sample Handling Systems

Any GC is only as good as the sample quality it measures, so Emerson’s gas chromatographs are custom-engineered for specific applications. Features include heated and open-panel designs, area classification-rated components, automatic calibration/validation, and various sample probes for reliable and stable sample extraction.

Gas Analysis GC Columns and Valve

Columns and Valves

Emerson’s Rosemountâ„¢ GasChromatographs uses 6 or 10 port valves with double-sided diaphragm actuation, eliminating springs, O-rings, and lubrication for durability and low maintenance. Minimal internal movement ensures rapid actuation, ideal for micro-packed and capillary columns. Features include easy access, unobstructed sample flow, rotary liquid injection valves, and a lifetime warranty.

Gas Analysis GC Detectors

Detectors

Rosemountâ„¢ GCs can use multiple detector types for various needs in process applications. These include Thermal Conductivity Detectors (TCD) for measurements down to ultra-low ppm, Flame Ionization Detectors (FID) for ppb levels, and Flame Photometric Detectors (FPD) for detecting trace sulfur compounds, allowing for precise and reliable measurement of components from percent levels to low ppm.

Gas Analysis GC Communications

Communications

Whether you need to network multiple process gas chromatographs throughout the plant or link asingle analyzer to the DCS system, Emerson’s Rosemountâ„¢ Gas Chromatographs can be configured to handle almost any communication scenario, including: Choice of Ethernet, Modbus Serial, or 4–20 mA analog outputs and Connectivity to plant control systems using industry-standard protocols such as Modbus

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Gas Chromatographs function by separating and detecting components within a sample. Within the analytical oven, a column facilitates the separation of various components, while valves inject the sample and direct it through different flow paths. Finally, detectors are employed to identify and quantify the separated sample components. Gas Chromatography is a well-established and proven technology to provide comprehensive full composition analysis for natural gas and process gases.
