Propulsion Optimization System - Electronics Cabinet

Electronics Cabinet

The electronics cabinet is the on-board brain of the system and includes the Programable Logic Controller (PLC). It integrates all sensor inputs, the existing PCS systems, and the cloud computing portion of the solution. It supports the bridge human-machine interface (HMI) panel and other onboard displays and provides satellite connectivity to the cloud computing portion of the solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Optimizing your propulsion system isn’t just about compliance—it’s about unlocking real savings, improving efficiency, and extending the lifespan of your fleet. See frequently asked questions about Propulsion Optimization and discover how SmartPropulsion and data-driven strategies can transform your fleet’s operational efficiency while keeping costs under control.

Marine propulsion optimization focuses on enhancing the efficiency and performance of a vessel's propulsion system. By optimizing fuel consumption, reducing emissions, and improving overall system reliability, it can significantly reduce operational costs and environmental impact.

Fuel savings can vary, but Aperio SmartPropulsion reports prove up to 10% reduction in fuel consumption, depending on the vessel type and operational conditions.

Aperio SmartPropulsion leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to help you save fuel, comply with emission regulations and get a better transparency of onboard data. Propulsion Optimization System (POS) SmartPropulsion automatically optimizes propulsion efficiency with dry docking-free installation and OPEX savings in just a few days.

Yes, our Aperio SmartPropulsion system has predictive maintenance and help predict potential problems and enable proactive maintenance, reducing the chances of unexpected downtime and costly repairs, leading to more reliable vessel operations.

Aperio SmartPropulsion optimizes energy use across the entire propulsion system, making your ship more cost-effective to operate.

Because no two voyages are identical, traditional comparisons do not work for fixed pitch propeller (FPP) vessels. Emerson instead uses a Lloyd’s Register–approved hindcast model that analyzes a completed voyage and calculates how much fuel could have been saved if the vessel had been operated optimally within the charter‑party limits.

The model identifies overspeed, unnecessary accelerations, and power fluctuations, then compares the actual voyage with the optimized reference voyage using SmartPropulsion. The difference represents the vessel’s documented potential savings if used with SmartPropulsion.

For vessels with controllable pitch propellers (CPP), savings can be documented through direct A/B onboard comparison. Operators can run the vessel for a period with Aperio SmartPropulsion activated and for a period without it, at the same speed and conditions, and compare the fuel consumption directly. This A/B comparison is possible because CPP vessels allow the system to optimize the interaction between propeller pitch and engine load, enabling a measurable, real‑time fuel reduction.

We can also see the fuel savings during speed testing done during sea trial. This is controlled testing at various RPM/Pitch combinations to see the fuel savings when the Aperio SmartPropulsion system is engaged or dis-engaged. Please note that speed testing is conducted under controlled conditions and does not cover the full operational profile of the vessel.
