Flow measurement of electrolyte in electrowinning
In electrowinning, accurate electrolyte flow measurement is crucial for stable operation, high-quality metal production, and overall process efficiency. The electrolyte, typically a metal-rich solution, must flow consistently through electrochemical cells to maintain optimal conditions. Steady flow ensures the continuous delivery of metal ions to the cathodes, enabling uniform plating and preventing defects such as uneven deposition and dendritic growth. Controlled flow also optimizes ion transport, preventing underperformance and reducing energy waste. Monitoring flow helps to detect issues like pump failures, clogged filters, or leaks early, thereby reducing downtime and protecting critical equipment. Effective flow control minimizes unnecessary circulation, improving energy efficiency and decreasing the energy consumption per tonne of metal produced. This can easily be achieved with non-intrusive ultrasonic flow meters, both portable and fixed, without interrupting the EW process.
