Highly Reliable

The Rosemount 4600 Pressure Transmitter is a compact, high- pressure transmitter that provides best-in-class reliability. It is available with the approvals necessary to be installed in classified areas.

Customer

Large producer of crude oil from oil sands in Canada

Application

Hydraulic lines on large valve actuators

Challenge

The first stage of their Upgrader Expansion (UE1) project included installing a third fluid coker, which is used to 'crack' bitumen molecules into lighter oils and gases. The UE1 project will increase the oil company's capacity by an additional 95,000 barrels a day with a 2005 total production goal of 360,000 barrels a day.

When the oil company began working on the UE1 project for bitumen processing, they quickly realized that they would need a compact, high-pressure transmitter to control the supply pressure on the hydraulic actuator lines. The 36" sliding gate control valves were so large that there wasn't space to direct-mount a traditional pressure transmitter. Typical compact pressure transducers/transmitters provided neither the intrinsic safety approvals nor the reliability that were necessary for the classified areas found in a bitumen processing plant.

Since there was no room around the actuator to direct-mount a traditional pressure transmitter, they believed the only way to complete the installation was to remote-mount the pressure transmitters using impulse piping, brackets, and other mounting hardware.

COST EFFECTIVE

The oil company estimated that they saved nearly $500 per measurement point by using the Rosemount 4600 Pressure Transmitter over a traditional industrial pressure transmitter.

Solution

The local Emerson sales representative quickly introduced the Rosemount 4600 Pressure Transmitter when he learned of his customer’s problem. Not only did the Rosemount 4600 Pressure Transmitter allow the customer to use a direct-mount method of installation in his space-constrained application, it provided the approvals required to allow an intrinsically-safe installation without expensive conduit runs.

The Canadian oil company estimated that they saved around $500 per measurement point by using the Rosemount 4600 Pressure Transmitter over a traditional industrial pressure transmitter:

  • Material savings of over $106 in instrument piping costs per pressure transmitter
  • Labor savings of over $364 per pressure transmitter

This amounted to a total installed cost savings of nearly $17,000 for their company.
