A traditional temperature measurement is comprised of three components: a temperature sensor, thermowell, and temperature transmitter. The temperature sensor obtains the actual temperature measurement, the thermowell protects the sensor from the process, and the transmitter relays the reading back to the control system. Temperature is one of the most commonly measured variables, as accurate temperature measurements are needed to help ensure process quality and yield, efficiency, custody transfer, and safety.
There are multiple types of industrial temperature measurements. Process temperature measurements are made by taking the temperature of a process fluid, typically in a pipe or a tank. These measurements are usually used for control purposes. Surface temperature measurements are taken on asset and reliability monitoring applications, such as heat exchangers, pumps, and other similar applications, to detect shifts or changes in trends. Ambient temperature measurements are made to monitor the temperature of a room or environment.
