Watercut Meter - Upstream

Upstream

There are multiple water cut measurement needs in the upstream oil and gas segment. A typical example is water cut metering on the oil leg of a three-phase production separator.

Watercut Meter - Measurement Technique

Measurement Technique

Unique microwave resonance technology is utilized within the Roxar Watercut Meter. This key measurement is taken across the full pipe bore, ensuring a highly accurate representative measurement, regardless of the distribution of water and oil throughout the pipe. Measurement is to fiscal quality, drift-free and sensitive down to 50ppm of water.

This key measurement is taken across the full pipe bore, ensuring a highly accurate representative measurement, regardless of the distribution of water and oil throughout the pipe. Measurement is to fiscal quality, drift-free and sensitive down to 50ppm of water.

The Roxar Watercut Meter is used in various applications, including Upstream: Monitoring the oil leg of three-phase separators and the liquid leg of two-phase separators, Midstream: Required for custody transfer measurements and during onloading for transportation and Downstream: Used for offloading at refineries and refined pipeline fiscal quality measurement.

Wax and scale build-up will affect meter performance. If scale or wax is present, an inline calibration can be performed to apply a correction for the measurement impact the layer will cause. This is a good solution until such time as meter cleaning can be scheduled. If layers are experienced and expected to repeat, use of chemical inhibitors is recommended.

In general, the flow should be well mixed to achieve optimum measurement quality. Nonetheless, the Roxar Watercut Meter performs 200 measurements per second, so assuming the flow is mixed sufficiently to ensure the sensor produces reliable signals, the meter will be able to measure the water cut, even in rapidly changing flowing conditions.

The Roxar Watercut Meter measures water and heavy oil with equal accuracy as water and crude oil. The measurement principles applied within the meter are equally suitable for heavy oil applications.

The Roxar Watercut Meter measures water and condensate with equal accuracy as water and crude oil. Flow separation will occur more rapidly with condensate though, so this should be considered when planning the meter installation. For example, long horizontal flowlines upstream of the meter should be avoided, and a mixer directly upstream of the meter should be considered.

Vertical installation is preferred, but horizontal installation is acceptable. The flow computer should be installed near the meter body, with cable lengths typically between 1 and 3 meters, depending on the meter size. Ensure the flow is well mixed; consider using a mixer upstream. Position the meter for optimal flow rates and turbulence to prevent hold-up or back-flow, ensuring accurate measurement. The sample point should be close to the meter.

ATEX and IECEx certifications are both available.

Service recommendations are tailored to each customer’s needs and the demands on the measurement instrument, ensuring Emerson supports their goals. We generally suggest an annual service visit for troubleshooting and maintenance. If issues arise, trained service engineers are available globally for prompt assistance. Additionally, remote helpdesk support offers quick technical help from Emerson specialists, enhancing on-site efficiency with a focused approach.

The Roxar Watercut Meter is designed for minimum maintenance, with no moving parts, and a drift-free measurement approach. The full-bore design reduces the impact of scale and wax compared to a probe design, and the Roxar Watercut Meter does not require dynamic calibration for set-up or continued high-performance. The Roxar Watercut Meter is therefore a low maintenance instrument from Emerson.

The most important aspect is ensuring the manual sample is as representative as possible. To achieve this, the sample point should be as close to the Roxar Watercut Meter as possible, and the sample should be taken at a time when the Roxar meter readings reflect stable flowing conditions.
