Improve Reliability of Level Measurement in Separator
A North American chemical manufacturer experienced catastrophic turbine damage and $15 million in production losses due to failed level measurement in a coalescer filter separator. The separator, critical in removing liquid from natural gas before it enters the turbine, had an unreliable level switch that failed to detect rising fluid levels. To address the issue, the company implemented an Emerson solution using seven Rosemount™ 3051SAL Level Transmitters with direct mount raised face flanged seals and remote mount LCD displays. Redundant transmitters were used with a 2-out-of-3 voting scheme to ensure safety and accurate level detection. A differential pressure transmitter was also installed to detect filter clogging. Remote mounting provided easy technician access and eliminated performance issues tied to capillary runs. This upgrade greatly improved measurement reliability, minimized maintenance, and significantly reduced the risk of future turbine damage.
